Pugs are cute and comical, a great pet for any family but if you are thinking about adopting one, there is some Pug information that you need to be aware of.

Before adopting any pet, you need to make sure that you can provide for the comfort and safety of the pet. Pugs are not outdoor dogs, so you must be prepared to keep the pug indoors which means setting up a proper sleeping area for your new furry friend.

Also, if you are not home during the day, you will need to think about where you will keep the Pug when you are at work. Will you use a crate or let him roam free? Decide this beforehand so you can be ready with the appropriate supplies.

Pugs are sociable animals which make them good family pets, but this also means that you will need to dedicate time to spend with your pug. You can’t leave your pug alone for extended lengths of time or you may find that he gets up to quite a bit of mischief.

Pug dog information pertaining to exercise is encouraging since they don’t really require much. In fact, a lot of Pugs are actually quite lazy and you will probably have to do a bit of work to encourage him to go out for a walk. Be that as it may, walks are a vital part of any dogs day so you should plan for at least 20 minutes of walk time each day.

When it comes to grooming, your Pug does have some special needs. One of the most interesting features of the Pug is his wrinkly facial skin, but these same wrinkles can actually be a health hazard for your pug because they can harbor dirt and germs. Therefore, you need to take the time to clean in between these folds periodically. Although Pugs have a short coat, they do shed so frequent brushing is recommended. Just like any other dog, you will need to trim your Pugs nails, keep his ears clean and brush his teeth.

When it comes to feeding a Pug, one need to practice restraint. This is because the Pug can tend to overeat and will easily gain weight. Excess weight on any dog and on Pugs in particular can cause a variety of health issues so in order to keep your Pug healthy, make sure you only feed him good quality food and don’t over do it!

Of course no Pug dog information discussion would be complete without stating that your Pug should have regular Veterinarian visits and that you should bring your dog in should you notice any change in behavior.

Pugs are wonderful companions and can live 15 years or more provided they get the proper care and nutrition.

The Portuguese Water Dog is an intelligent, hard working dog that was bred to help fishermen. They generally get along well with other dogs but should be socialized when young for other pets. If at all possible, they need plenty of exercise and if there can be water involved, you have a happy dog. They are said to love children. As a reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.

*Approximate Adult Size. The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the Portuguese Water Dog is 16 to 22 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 35 to 55 pounds.

*Special Health Considerations. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Portuguese Water Dog is no exception. Be on the lookout for skin conditions, Canine Hip Dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness) and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (inherited disease of the retina that can cause vision loss and blindness). This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

*Grooming. The Portuguese Water Dog has a profuse, heavy coat of either curly or wavy hair. She should be brushed regularly. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat, avoid mats, help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her.

Her ears should be checked once a week and be kept clean. If you have her professionally groomed, make sure ear cleaning and inspection is part of the package. No water or excess fluid should get in the dogs ears, and do not try to irrigate the ears. Ear cleaning is too complicated and critical to instruct here. Look for hair growing in the ear canal, excess wax, or moisture. If her ears have a discharge, foul odor or she seems to be in distress and you suspect an infection, or tumor, consult your veterinarian.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet.

*Life Span. The Portuguese Water Dog can live between 10 and 14 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.

*History. The Portuguese Water Dog comes from Portugal where they were used to herd fish for fishermen. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1983.

Article by Melinda Smith

A dog is a man’s best friend. Dog information is a must. Your dog will remain the most loyal friend you will ever have, but his life depends on you in more ways than you might realize. Seldom, however, will he ever complain if you mistreat him. But what if you were killing your dog every day without even knowing it: by the food you are feeding him.

Many dog owners have heard of the horror stories involving commercial dog food, especially if you are feeding your pet this commercial food. But you are most certainly not alone. As each year passes, there are more pet owners that are worried about the quality and health benefits of commercial dog food. Unfortunately, some of these commercial foods do contain ingredients that can be harmful to the pets consuming them.

Chemical preservatives are contained in many dog foods, and are not safe to be eaten by dogs. These cause your dogs to be more prone to some infections and other disorders. Only proper dog information can help you in protecting your dog.

As commercial dog food has turned out not to be as good as once believed, more dog owners are starting to feed dogs the food that they have made on their own, or else high quality human grade prepared dog food instead. Homemade dog food, as well as Lifes Abundance dog food, are certainly among the finest alternatives to commercial dog foods. As opposed to the latter, homemade dog food and other premium dog food is much higher in nutrients but also has much less fat, thus guaranteeing that the dog will lose any extra weight that he had gained from consuming commercial dog foods.

Dogs that are fed homemade dog food often have silkier coats, better breath, and often will be more active but less aggressive. Due to the health benefits they receive, this means you’ll avoid lots of vet bills as well. This is why it is less costly to feed the dog homemade food in the long term.

Homemade dog treat recipes are a wonderful way to provide your dog with treats that are sure to be enjoyed. There are many delicious dog treats available commercially of varying quality, but finding homemade dog treat recipes that appeal to your dog can allow you to make a dog treat that your dog will go crazy for each time they receive it.

Dogs, like humans, require a proper diet to keep them active and healthy. Making sure you have the correct dog information will guarantee you buy the right type and highest quality of food to satisfy their nutritional needs. You can buy dog food online, at supermarkets or at pet stores, but make sure you get the highest quality you can afford. This will ensure that your dog stays in the best possible condition.

A dog is the best friend you can have. However, you’re responsible for his survival more than you may realize. Some commercial dog food contains harmful ingredients. Chemical preservatives like BHT and BHA, and ethoxyquin can make dogs more prone to infections and other disorders.

Dog grooming at home solutions are an alternative to professional grooming services, and many pet owners see it as a way of saving money. There are advantages and disadvantages about dog home grooming, since you may save money but you definitely invest time and effort in the activity. Statics show that short-haired small breeds are the most compatible with dog grooming home conditions. Any dog that requires complex grooming, special maintenance and hair cutting is better handled professionally than at home, because the owner may lack the skills to cope with the task.

Equipment could be a problem with dog grooming at home trials. Without a minimum of supplies the operation is not possible. Grinders, brushes, clippers and even a grooming table are actually considered basic. Combs and scissors are useful, although not always a necessity. Don’t forget about special shampoos and cleaning solutions.

Dog grooming home practice comes with the responsibility for the pet’s health condition, therefore, don’t take it lightly.

Look for tips and suggestions to learn more about dog grooming at home challenges. Try to find out about the possibly special needs of the breed and talk to the veterinarian if you notice any injury or health problem under the dog’s coat. When left untreated or neglected because they are not noticed in time, lots of apparently harmless bumps on the dog’s hair could become real health problems. The advantage of professional grooming here is that such cases are easier to find and signal on thorough cleaning. Pay the same attention to the nails, teeth, eyes and ears as you pay to brushing and bathing.

Nail trimming is necessary at least once a month, depending on how short you cut the dog’s claws.

Great care is necessary because lots of vein injuries happen when you cut nails too short. Dog grooming home care therefore requires lots of patience: you have to treat the dog gently because few pets like their paws touched. In fact, the process of nail cutting and trimming is pretty slow considering that you need to take breaks, pat and reward the dog with small treats in order to make it cooperative. In conclusion, you may save money with dog grooming home solutions, but you’ll definitely put time and effort into it. The choice is all yours!

Home dental care for your pet is easier than ever and all it takes is a little awareness of the tools available and a reminder of the health problems that can arise if neglected. Although there is alot you can do to ward off disease and other problems at home, regular checkups from your Vet should always be a part of the prevention program. And of course, if you ever see symptoms of problems in between visits, don’t hesitate to get your little friend some professional attention.

The most common method of supporting your pet’s dental health is providing some sort of bone (real or artificial) the dog can chew on. This action goes a long way to strengthening tooth structure and can eliminate or reduce plaque buildup. Dogs are natural chewers, so this method of enhancing dental health is easy! Recreational raw beef bones or rawhides are also wonderful materials to keep the teeth structures of your dog clean and free from formation of plaque and buildup of bacteria.

The toothbrush is also a valuable tool in the fight against plaque and other bacterial invaders.

Ask your Vet next time you’re in the office for recommended brushes and toothpastes. Because your pet will no doubt swallow whatever you put in its mouth, it’s not advised to use your own personal toothpaste when cleaning his or her teeth. Homemade pastes are also safe and easy to make, being composed mostly of baking soda. Use caution when trying to brush your dog’s teeth! You should know if you have the kind of dog that won’t tolerate it well. Dental wipes may be be an option in this case, also available at pet supply stores and probably your Vet’s office.

From chew toys to toothbrushes, maintaining your dog’s overall health through dental readiness has never been easier! Try these simple techniques combined with regular visits to your Vet’s office for a healthier, happier dog.

How To Become Alpha Dog

Become the alpha dog in your home, or you will be an unhappy dog owner.

What is a alpha dog?

A alpha dog is the leader of the pack he is the one all the other dogs look up to. The alpha dog is confident and always in control. If the other dogs in the pack disobey the alpha dog. The alpha dog will use his body language, and growl to keep the pack submissive. The alpha dog eats first, and is always in the lead of the pack.

Most dog owners make the same mistake when bringing home their new dog. They show way to much affection. If you want to become the alpha dog you must train you dog first then show affection. Once your dog see’s you as the alpha dog you can show your dog affection. Until then you must show your dog who the alpha dog is.

How to Become The Alpha Dog.

Before you bring your dog home you must have everyone in the house know how to become the alpha dog. Everyone must be on the same page when becoming the alpha dog. If everyone is consistent you will train your dog to become submissive. When you train your dog to become submissive he will respect you. Your dog needs to learn that he has last rank in the pack. Everyone in the house must have leadership over the dog. When your dog knows his role in the pack you will have a obedient submissive dog.

Always eat before your dog. Then feed your dog last. In order to become the alpha dog your dog needs to see you eat first. The reason for this is in a pack of dogs the alpha dog eats first. If your dog sees you and your family eating before him. The dog will assume you are the alpha dog. You, the dog owner will be one step closer to becoming the alpha dog.

Don’t let your dog sleep in your bed or jump onto the furniture. Becoming the alpha dog means to own your domain. The alpha dog is the only one that sleeps in the den. If you let a dog sleep in your bed you are showing the dog that you are equals. If a dog thinks his owner is his equal. He will not win his respect. If a dog dose not respect his owner, the dog will not become submissive. A submissive dog is a well obedient dog.

When leash training a dog always exit the house first, and enter the house first. A dog must follow a dog owners lead from the very beginning, or the dog will be walking the dog owner.

Becoming the alpha dog is a rewarding yet challenging job. A dog owner must have authority in his voice when training a dog. A dog can tell if a human is confident leader just by the tone of his voice, and body language.

Dog Training Tips from the Experts

Whether you have a new puppy or an old dog, it makes good sense to invest a little time training them. And while there is an abundance of information available about how to train your dog, you can go wrong with dog training tips from the experts.

1. Positive reinforcement is essential. While there are many theories on how to train your dog, most dog training experts agree that positive reinforcement works best. Positive reinforcement involves rewarding your dog with verbal praise “good dog”, physical praise like a pat on the head and food rewards. It doesn’t involve yelling at your dog, hitting or punishing them.

Positive reinforcement works because it builds a bond of trust with your dog. Dogs are motivated by rewards especially food rewards.

2. Consistency is essential. If you’re working with your dog on a specific skill or trick then try to train them at the same time every day. This helps your dog know what to expect. Most dogs thrive on structure and will perform and learn much faster when they know what’s expected. If you’re training using food rewards, try to train your dog before mealtime so they’re a little bit hungry and motivated.

3. Be patient. Dogs tend to learn in waves. Sometimes they pick things up quickly and then the next day it seems like you have to start over from the very beginning. Be patient. Start each new trick with very small steps and be clear about what you expect. Even with the smallest tricks like “sit” you will want to break it down into smaller steps.

4. Use hand cues in addition to verbal cues. Some dogs have an easier time understanding and remembering hand signals than they do with verbal cues. Assign a hand signal to each trick or behavior you are training.

5. Train in small increments. Dogs have short attention spans. Trying to train them for twenty or thirty minutes isn’t going to work. They’re going to get frustrated and lose focus. Instead, keep training sessions to no more than five minutes.

In the beginning, you may want to train for only a minute or two until your dog learns to look forward to training. Dogs can learn to dislike training. Keeping the training sessions short will help them learn to enjoy the process.

6. Always end on a positive note. Learning a new trick is hard work. End each training session, no matter how frustrating, on a positive note. Always give your dog a trick or behavior to perform that they know how to perform and end with a food reward and plenty of praise.

7. Keep your dog healthy. Finally, one of the most important dog training tips from the experts recommends feeding your dog a quality dog food, giving them plenty of fresh water and making sure they get enough sleep. A healthy dog is a happier dog and will learn desired behaviors much more quickly.

Dog training is the way to go if you want to get the best out of your dog. You can build a lifelong bond between you and your dog through obedience training. A trained dog is more effective and enjoyable as a friend companion and playmate. Though a dog can be trained for different purposes such as hunting, law enforcement, dog sports etc what most dogs require is just basic obedience training.

Dogs are ‘pack’ animals. They live in families called packs where there is a dominant leader. This leader is followed by everybody in the pack. Your dog sees your family as his pack and will naturally follow the leader. If he sees no apparent leader, he will take up the leadership and start dictating the laws. This is the general picture of an untrained and unruly dog. Dog training will help you to assert your leadership so your dog can follow you.

Basic obedience training usually aims to condition your dog to the following six commands; stay, sit, down, come, close and heel. Your dog can be trained by different people. A friend can help or you can get a professional to train him for you. However the best person to train your dog is you. Personally training your dog helps you to create a special bond between the two of you. Understanding grows as you work and play with him and you create the best possible relationship with your dog.

Although you can train your dog at home, the best place to train him is a dog training class. He can get trained with little distraction. You will see experts in action and you will be able to watch, learn and practice. This will reduce the frustrations of training for you and your dog. You will learn how to use commands, teach them to your dog and give proper reward or praise. Your dog will also have the opportunity of socializing with other dogs. Dog training classes will motivate you by giving you help and support.

PuppyInTraining.com – Our black Labrador Retriever, Stetson is a fast eater and lucky for us we recently received a brand new Aikiou Dog Bowl for review. The Aikiou Dog Bowl was great and really slowed Stetson down. It took him 20 seconds to eat 1 1 cups with his regular dog bowl and over 3 minutes with his Aikiou Dog Bowl. If you have a fast eater then I recommend checking out the Aikiou Dog Bowl
