Caring for your dogâeuro™s health is not too far different from caring for your own. It is mostly just common sense. Dogs, like their human owners, need shelter, nutritious food, plenty of clean water and fresh air, grooming and exercise.
Most of the veterinary products we buy for our dogs are in order to combat the effects of the environment. Parasites, pollutants, food contaminants, food deficiencies and allergens seem to cause most of the problems.
·Out of necessity, today most pets are kept in fairly restricted areas, and this makes for ideal conditions for re-infecting themselves with worms. Together with booster shots, de-worming is one of the most regular things you will have to do to your dog. Most vets recommend that you change medicines or at least alternate the treatments you use each time.
Worms very quickly become immune to the same de-wormers used time after time.
·Fleas, lice and other mites are generally picked up from other animals. So if you take your dog walking where other animals tend to go, you will need to examine him regularly for these parasites and use flea collars or other medications to get rid of them. Fleas in particular are doubly pesky because they often carry tapeworm eggs to infest your pet.
·If you go anywhere where there may be ticks in the long grass, you will be wise to use veterinary products to repel them and prevent bites, rather than treat the bites and illness they cause afterwards.
·Repellents are also available against flies and they are very effective.
·Pollutants and contaminants should be avoided; the same as you should in your own food. Check the ingredients of what your dog eats. His good quality dog food is probably safer for him than the take-aways you buy! If his food doesnâeuro™t seem to suit him, get your vet to check him out for allergens and ingredients that he may be sensitive to. There is almost always a variety of dog food to cater for dogs with sensitivities and ailments that require special diets.
·As far as deficiencies go, you and your vet will have to watch out for symptoms, but most good quality dog foods are fairly complete. There are general tonics and supplements for your dogs as well. One of the most common deficiencies in dogs is oils. Donâeuro™t make the mistake of supplementing your dogâeuro™s food with cheap cooking oil. They need their healthy Omegas just as you do and are just as likely as a human to get cancer from the trans fats in processed oils. Your vet or veterinary supplier will be able to sell you healthy cold pressed oils specially designed for dogs. They should be kept in a refrigerator and used up within their sell-by date. A dog that is getting enough healthy oils always has a lovely shiny coat.
·Clean water, adequate shelter from hot or cold, a good regular brushing, and lots of walks with his beloved owner is all that your dog needs now, together with plenty of love.
